The Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. recently anounced the reactor will not be back up and running until the spring of 2010.According to the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM), NRU Chalk River supplies 31 percent of the world’s Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), the parent isotope of Technetium-99m (Tc-99m), required to make many of the radiopharmaceuticals used in nuclear medicine single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The subsequent worldwide shortage of Moly-99 has become a healthcare problem of international proportions.Impact of Radioisotope CrisisEach year more than 20 million people in the United States, two million in Canada, 10 million in Europe, and 14 million in the rest of the world benefit from nuclear medicine tests involving medical isotopes, reports SNM. Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) constitutes nearly half of all nuclear medicine procedures, and over 95 percent of these studies are performed exclusively or in conjunction with a Tc-99m labeled tracer, according to a report by Arlington Medical Resources. The shutdown has forced hospitals in the United States and Canada to ration supplies and delay medical tests.1An alternative to Tc-99m SPECT for MPI is positron emission tomography (PET). PET MPI is commonly performed using Rubidium 82 (82Rb). CardioGen-82 (Rubidium Rb 82 Generator) PET perfusion imaging is a rapidly emerging technology in the field of MPI.MDS Nordion and GE Healthcare produce CardioGen-82 for Bracco Diagnostics Inc., a generator-based, cardiac PET perfusion imaging agent approved by the FDA. It is produced using a specialized generator technology. Once administered, Rubidium-82 is used as a PET imaging tracer for perfusion studies of the heart to examine blood flow through heart vessels.Cardiac SPECT to PETBut how close is the medical community to switching from cardiac SPECT to cardiac PET? There are a number of factors for any facility to consider when adopting PET-Rubidium 82 technology for nuclear PET. Foremost is whether there is a robust enough patient volume for the procedure to cover the monthly cost of the Rubidium 82 supply.To get a clearer picture on the matter, Imaging Technology News spoke with James K. O’Donnell, M.D., director, division of nuclear medicine and PET in the radiology department of University Hospitals of Cleveland and an associate professor of radiology at Case Western Reserve University.Imaging Technology News (ITN): How many cardiac PET scans are you averaging on a weekly basis?Dr. James O’Donnell (JD): We probably do 120 to 150 PET scans a week, and between 30-40 of those with rubidium for cardiac PET images a week. We have five gamma cameras doing the SPECT imaging. I only have one PET scanner available to do the cardiac, and I am having to adjust to the high oncology volume too.ITN: What is causing the delay in adopting PET for cardiac imaging?JD: We have vast experience with SPECT imaging, and it contributes a lot to the diagnosis. There’s much less experience with PET, and PET’s growing, and much of the evidence says PET is better. So PET has really taken off, especially in the non-cardiac world. We do 25 to 30 PET scans a day for oncology. It’s very good for tumor localization. But it’s been a long battle only to get it approved by Medicare and insurance companies because it’s an expensive test. We have had to show over and over again that it’s a better test for lung cancer and breast cancer rather than just getting a CT scan, which shows you exquisite anatomy, but the PET scan will show you abnormalities before the lymph nodes get big enough to call abnormal.Now that PET scanners are getting distributed in the medical world, the rubidium, thanks to Bracco and Cardiogen-82, has emerged as a really good perfusion agent for the heart. The one drawback for positron emitters like rubidium is that they have only a 75-second half-life. You need the combination of the technology plus the isotope generator. Now rubidium is being used more regularly, although it’s expensive. You need to have a reasonable volume to make it feasible.ITN: Do you think a shortage of Tech-99 could drive some physicians to switch from SPECT to PET for cardiac imaging?JD: It would be ideal to switch from SPECT to PET for cardiac imaging. But it depends because you have to have access to the PET scanner and have the radioisotope available.If you’re in a shop that has been doing entirely SPECT imaging, but you’re doing oncology imaging and there is the technetium shortage, then you may want to look into switching to PET. If you’re doing imaging in a cardiac office in a small town, you don’t have that option because you don’t have the space or money to spend on a PET scanner. It’s a matter of having the technology available and having a big enough volume.With the rubidium generator, you have bought the whole generator, and it will decay over the 28 days, and if you don’t do enough studies, it’s an operational expense of $30,000 to $40,000 monthly. One of the technetium compounds, the technetium-sestamibi has just come off patent and is available in generic form, so it’s quite a bit cheaper. That’s the economics that the rubidium generator is up against.ITN: What is the objective of your current study?JD: We are doing both PET and SPECT on the same day on the same patients. We are seeing a pretty clear benefit of PET over SPECT. We presented the study at Society of Nuclear Medicine meeting in Toronto in June.It’s the fourth direct comparison of both SPECT and PET. What we have tried to do here is eliminate all of the other variables. We are using the same patient on the same day. It is a direct comparison of SPECT and rubidium-82 PET on the same day, and it’s with a single stress.We use pharmacologic stress with Persantine for patients who can’t run on the treadmill. You do a set of images while a patient is at rest and get them on the treadmill. At peak stress on the treadmill you give them another dose of the isotope and compare what the perfusion is at stress versus rest. If the stress image shows a defect that isn’t there at rest, then that is ischemia. If it’s abnormal at rest, it could be a scar from a previous heart attack.You are always looking for normal versus scar versus ischemia. We do both rest and stress SPECT and rest and stress PET on the same day by our protocol. We only give one infusion of the Persantine, and then we give both isotopes for the stress. Then you do the PET scan followed by the SPECT scan. One day in the same patient with only one episode of pharmacologic vasodilator stress with the Persantine.We give both technetium and rubidium, and we can compare SPECT and PET. And PET is better.ITN: How will your study lead to improvement in patient outcomes?JD: We are looking at how much better PET is than SPECT. We’re looking at patient outcomes over time, how are they responding to therapy, have they required bypass surgery, did they benefit by having this test, were their outcomes better, were they managed better because of the information, did they live longer? Or did they have fewer heart events – having an infarct or death?Most everybody agrees you’re looking for anatomy and physiology. The blockage is important and now they are doing CT angiography to see the blood vessels. But the anatomy isn’t always the answer. The physiology is even more important because if somebody has a partial blockage, but there is no evidence of ischemia on a good test physiologically, like SPECT or PET, then they don’t need any intervention because whatever the degree of anatomic change, it isn’t really causing the patient a perfusion abnormality.ITN: Could this study generate reimbursement for cardiac PET?JD: Sure. Is the patient going to do better because we did this test? There was the END study3 (economics of noninvasive diagnosis) that was published several years ago. It looked at several thousand patients with chest pain. Half of them went right to the cath lab, and the other half had a SPECT study. The decision of whether to have the invasive angiography hinged on the results of your SPECT scan. The patients who had the invasive test didn’t do any better than those that had the scan first. So, there’s no improved outcome by taking the patient right to the cath lab, and the expense on the patients that have the coronary angiogram was far greater.You only send patients to the cath lab if they showed they have ischemia. The point of it was that it makes more sense to do the noninvasive test; patients do just as well, and the test helps predict whether they need coronary angiography and any other test down the line.Most everybody agrees you’re looking for anatomy and physiology. The blockage is important, and now they are doing CT angiography to see the blood vessels. But the anatomy isn’t always the answer. The physiology is even more important because if somebody has a partial blockage but no evidence of ischemia on a good physiological test, like SPECT or PET, then they don’t need any intervention because whatever the degree of anatomic change, it isn’t really causing the patient a perfusion abnormality.ITN: Do you anticipate that in 10 years, 50 percent of the cardiac imaging exams in the United States will be done on PET?JD: Easily in less than 10 years. Barring the government arbitrarily decides not to allow PET scans to be done. I think that government artificially inhibited the growth of PET for oncology. But if the technology is allowed to speak for itself, I think within 10 years almost everything we do in nuclear medicine with nuclear isotopes may be PET because there are more biologically active tracers. Once an emerging technology confined to early adopters, server-based advanced visualization has gradually become a more popular solution in the medical imaging informatics marketplace in the last few years. This has carried on to the point that it can today be deemed the de facto standard for advanced visualization in medical imaging enterprises. Now carried over by virtually every vendor in the industry, including picture archiving and communications systems (PACS) vendors and independent software vendors (ISVs), the market’s adoption of server-client advanced visualization (started by companies such as TeraRecon and Emageon more than 10 years ago) has finally reached the critical mass required to be considered ”standard.”That’s not to say that the stand-alone workstation model is no longer a viable solution for today’s market. But it is reasonable to say that its addressable market opportunity has shrunk considerably and is now limited to a few niche segments. One customer segment that still favors the workstation model over the enterprise model lies at the very large-scale end of the imaging provider market, where many larger academic facilities still prefer to concentrate their image post-processing power in a “superlab.”? In these superlabs, dedicated “3-D techs” perform the 3-D functions for the entire enterprise, typically by using stand-alone workstations from multiple vendors.The other customer segment lies at the opposite end of the provider spectrum, where many smaller hospitals still rely on a few, dedicated workstations to conduct a limited volume of advanced studies. Most of the facilities in between, however, have already implemented, or are at least seriously considering, deploying server-based advanced visualization. For the mid-sized and large hospitals and distributed networks, it has become an evident choice.Equipment OEMs Back in the GameUp until a couple of years ago, the major imaging original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) had very limited capability to offer their customers real enterprise-wide advanced visualization.? They were mainly selling modality-specific, dedicated, stand-alone scanner workstations, which undoubtedly provided some of the most advanced clinical applications for each individual imaging modality.However, in order to embed these applications into their PACS offering to allow enterprise access, the “Big Three” needed first to overcome conflicts of interest between the various business units involved internally.? Then, in some cases, the vendors had to re-design each application so it could work as a thin client. These obstacles provide the OEMs with justification for late entry into enterprise advanced visualization and for not staying ahead of the curve as this paradigm emerged as an industry best practice.Nevertheless, by now the OEMs have considerably ramped up their solutions for enterprise advanced visualization. They have spent the last year or two marketing their new-generation solutions.Such is the case with Philips Healthcare, which was probably the first among the OEM vendors to provide advanced visualization and computed tomography (CT) clinical applications integrated with its iSite PACS, with a multimodality suite called Volume Vision. Similarly, GE Healthcare last year launched the AW server, a scalable version of its popular AW workstation that was updated to offer advanced remote-viewing capabilities and full radiology information system (RIS)/PACS integration.Siemens Healthcare opted for a broader product overhaul by launching a brand-new enterprise advanced visualization platform, syngo.via, along with a new RIS/PACS platform, syngo.plaza, at the 2009 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) annual meeting.? These two complementary solutions work in a centralized server-client environment. ?Toshiba Enters by Means of M&AToshiba, the fourth-largest imaging OEM, joined the “Big Three” as an active market player in advanced visualization by means of merger and acquisition when a subsidiary, Merger Sub, announced it would acquire Vital Images in April 2011. This acquisition came as a surprise only because it came less than two years after Toshiba bought the advanced vis business of Barco, formerly independent and known as Voxar.It was quite predictable otherwise in that the two acquisitions are not at all redundant, but complementary. In fact, Toshiba already had an OEM license to use Voxar technology, which served as the engine of Toshiba’s CT scanners, and this partnership was in place for several years before Toshiba acquired Voxar. ?Much in the same way, Toshiba had a reseller agreement in place with Vital Images for many years before it initially stepped up its collaboration and joint research and development (R&D) before finally acquiring it. All these years, Toshiba has been the single largest customer of Vital Images — accounting for almost a third of revenues.? For Toshiba, the acquisition is merely a way of bringing its advanced visualization business entirely in-house.The Vital Images acquisition certainly spiced up the competitive dynamics in the market. Toshiba was the only large equipment vendor to voice the benefits of a best-of-breed approach and was equally selling the third-party solutions from Vital Images and TeraRecon. Now it has a comprehensive solution of its own. This acquisition also makes TeraRecon the only major advanced visualization vendor to remain an independent company today, since its next largest competitors are much smaller companies.? Vital Images’ acquisition might well strengthen TeraRecon’s position, but could also challenge the company.Ironically, it is likely that Toshiba’s latest acquisition came out as good news for the “Big Three,” because Vital Images was in an ideal position to come in independently, armed with its strong product portfolio and displace any OEMs’ dedicated workstations. Vital Images’ ability to continue do so as a part of Toshiba is still a question, as only time can tell if Vital Images’ acquisition by Toshiba has essentially eliminated a strong ISV contender or only made it stronger.PACS Vendors Figured It OutDuring the past few years, different PACS vendors have taken different routes to meet increasing customer demand for enterprise access to advanced visualization — and have done so without committing excessive R&D bandwidth to this one particular PACS feature. To reach the point today where virtually every PACS vendor has secured at least basic 3-D PACS features, some vendors have worked more and more closely with their ISV partners to enhance the integration of their respective products.Other vendors have developed these capabilities in-house, and yet other smaller PACS vendors have taken advantage of the value proposition of a burgeoning OEM industry. They have forged OEM business deals allowing them to make use of the software development kits (SDK) of various OEM providers to incorporate basic 3-D and 4-D imaging functionality into their PACS. In most instances, since the technology is re-branded, it is transparent to end-users and offered as a PACS upgrade. These PACS upgrades have happened gradually during the past three years, such that the majority of the market now has at least basic PACS-based advanced visualization capabilities.However, it does seem, now that PACS-based 3-D has gone mainstream, that the OEM advanced visualization industry has been trying to raise the bar. Visage Imaging, for example, is an advanced visualization vendor that found its roots as an OEM business unit of Mercury Computer Systems before it became a wholly owned subsidiary of that company in August 2007 and then was sold to Australian-based healthcare IT firm Pro Medicus in January 2009. Since then, Visage seems to have moved on from operating merely as an OEM 3-D vendor, as it is now selling a full-fledged RIS/PACS/3-D system direct to market.Calgary Scientific is another interesting example, as the entrepreneurial company once focused on OEMing advanced clinical applications is now marketing a full suite of Web enablement and mobility enhancement OEM technology for data-intensive applications in the medical imaging industry and beyond. Fovia Inc. is yet another 3-D OEM provider that started out in medical imaging to then make strides in various other vertical markets, as its CPU-based rendering engine gains recognition by various leading companies providing 3-D intensive applications to their respective fields.The combination of these industry trends and dynamics bodes well for the future of advanced visualization, as its evolution may act as a driving force toward greater enterprise access and collaboration in and around medical imaging.Frost & Sullivan enables clients to accelerate growth and achieve best-in-class positions in growth, innovation and leadership. One of the biggest hurdles of hybrid positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance (PET/MR) imaging is the prevalence of motion artifacts—blurring and ghostly visual anomalies caused by patient motion on the table during imaging. An MR technology has now been designed for PET/MR that employs tiny radiofrequency solenoids—metal coils integrated into hardware placed on the body—to track motion from those who do not or cannot stay put. Special software can then use the additional information provided by the coils to optimize the image, according to research being revealed at SNMMI’s 2013 Annual Meeting.One of the most important applications of this technology is in brain imaging for patients with dementia, who often have movement disorders such as those in Parkinson’s. For these patient populations, this technology improves already exceptional diagnostic imaging and creates better potential for therapy monitoring in the future.?“Dementia is one of the biggest health problems facing human society now and in the future. PET is a powerful tool in early detection and treatment of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Early diagnosis of dementia can have a tremendous impact on treatment for patients and their family members,” said Chuan Huang, Ph.D., lead researcher for the study, from Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. “Simultaneous PET/MR allows measurement of anatomy, functionality, and biochemistry of tissues and cells. Combined with our low-cost MR micro-coil–based motion correction, PET/MR provides essential information about the brain and other parts of the body with greater accuracy, even for long studies or research involving motion, which opens the door to more expansive multi-modality studies.”During brain scans in particular, patient head motion without corrective technology can lead to imaging failures due to extensive blurring in reconstructed PET data. Even patients who are restrained are likely to move position during scans that can take an hour or more, and just a few millimeters or degrees off can cause artifacts.“PET imaging is similar to taking a photo inside the body using specialized imaging data,” said Huang. “Just like with a normal camera, when you take a picture in an extremely lowlight environment you need long exposure times to get a good quality picture. If the object is moving, the image blurs. Our research is essentially providing an image stabilizer for PET/MR scanners, which can then generate crisp and clear images even though the object is moving. Our approach is similar to capturing each of the light rays coming from the moving object and configuring it back to its original position.”The micro-coils are smaller than a dime and just millimeters in diameter. Before scanning they are fixed on an apparatus placed on the patient’s body, providing real-time and 3D fields of motion during imaging that are incorporated during image reconstruction. Other motion tracking techniques already in clinical use include “gating” technologies that involve the equivalent of freezing a motion picture and arranging film stills in a pattern that omits motion, then splicing them back together; but this means effectively throwing away meaningful information between data splices, which degrades scan quality.Researchers conducted the study by using phantoms, or mock humans, and motion was simulated using a ventilator system. The MR micro-coil apparatus was positioned on the phantom, and motion tracking was acquired simultaneously during PET/MR scanning. Results of the study showed that 3D motion-tracked PET imaging using MR micro-coils dramatically reduced movement-related imaging artifacts. Sabine Sartoretti, M.D.As soon as the Compressed SENSE technology became available to the MRI team at Kantonsspital Winterthur (Switzerland), the site started applying the acceleration possibilities for their MRI scans of the brain, spine and joints, as well as pelvis and abdomen. Using Compressed SENSE appeared a simple yet powerful way to accelerate MRI scanning for different contrast types and sequences, in 2-D as well as 3-D. The significantly reduced scan times convinced the team to plan for adjusting all their ExamCards, with the objective to shorten patient timeslots and then actually plan for increasing their number of MRI patients per day. This is of strategic importance to help them generate revenue when reimbursements go down. How Fast Can We Scan Without Losing Image Quality?The new Philips Compressed SENSE technology is a powerful acceleration technique for a wide variety of MRI sequences in a broad range of anatomies. The method combines compressed sensing and sensitivity encoding as in SENSE into one, more powerful, acceleration technique called Compressed SENSE.Kantonsspital Winterthur (KSW) was one of the first 10 sites in the world to receive Compressed SENSE on its Ingenia 1.5T and Achieva 3.0T MRI scanners. Sartoretti and radiologist Rene Patzwahl, M.D., have been using it since September 2017 and are very satisfied with the results. “As Compressed SENSE works in virtually all anatomical areas and with many different scan techniques and contrast types, it has the potential to help us reduce the scan time per patient. We can, for example, accelerate a routine brain protocol with six sequences (DWI, transverse T2, transverse T1 IR, SWIp, 3D FLAIR, 3D T1 TFE with gadolinium) by 22 percent by accelerating three sequences (SWIp, 3D FLAIR, 3D T1 TFE with gadolinium) between 30 and 40 percent. That shorter scanning time will then benefit our patients and in addition, it will allow us to scan more patients,” said Sartoretti.In order to get there, Compressed SENSE has to be incorporated into KSW’s customized set of ExamCards. “Our goal is to reduce scan time, but we want the same image quality as before, because most of our ExamCards have been meticulously optimized to our preferences,” she continued.“Our approach for the last weeks has been to add an additional sequence with Compressed SENSE to the original exam, and then compare the images,” concluded Sartoretti. In this approach we have initially been using a Compressed SENSE (CS) factor as recommended by Philips, then followed by applying either higher or a lower CS factors. Repeating this in the next patient and for the different sequences, and carefully looking at the images afterwards, helps us decide what the best Compressed SENSE factor is for us.”*Compared to scans without compressed SENSE. Hybrid nanomembranes make conformal wearable sensors possible demo South Korean researchers with

first_imgA team of researchers from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in South Korea has developed an ultrathin, and transparent wearable device that is capable of turning your skin into a loudspeaker. The device has been created to help the hearing and speech impaired people. However, it has potential applications in other domains such as wearable IoT sensors, and healthcare devices. Skin-attachable NM ?loudspeaker This new device is created with conductive hybrid nanomembranes (NMs) with nanoscale thickness, comprising an orthogonal silver nanowire array embedded in a polymer matrix. This helps substantially enhance the electrical as well as mechanical properties of ultrathin polymer NMs. There is no loss in the optical transparency because of the orthogonal array structure. “Here, we introduce ultrathin, conductive, and transparent hybrid NMs that can be applied to the fabrication of skin-attachable NM loudspeakers and microphones, which would be unobtrusive in appearance because of their excellent transparency and conformal contact capability” as mentioned in the research paper. Hybrid NMs help significantly enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of ultrathin polymer NMs, which can then be intimately attached to the human skin. After this, the nanomembrane is used as a loudspeaker which can be attached to almost anything to produce sounds. The researchers also introduced a similar device, which acts as a microphone that can be connected to smartphones and computers for unlocking voice-activated security systems. Skin-attachable and transparent NM loudspeaker The researchers fabricated a skin-attachable loudspeaker using hybrid NMs. This speaker is capable of emitting thermoacoustic sound with the help of temperature-induced oscillation of the surrounding air. This temperature oscillation is caused by Joule heating of the orthogonal AgNW array upon the application of an AC voltage. The sound emitted from the NM loudspeaker is then analyzed with the help of an acoustic measurement system. “We used a commercial microphone to collect and record the sound produced by the loudspeaker. To characterize the sound generation of the loudspeaker, we confirmed that the sound pressure level (SPL) of the output sound increases linearly as the distance between the microphone and the loudspeaker decreases” reads the research paper. Wearable and transparent NM microphone The researchers also designed a wearable and transparent microphone using hybrid NMs combined with micropatterned PDMS (NM microphone). This microphone is capable of detecting sound and recognizing a human voice. These wearable microphones are sensors, which are attached to a speaker’s neck for sensing the vibration of the vocal folds. Skin-attachable NM Microphone The skin-attachable NM microphone comprises a hybrid NM mounted to a micro pyramid-patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. This sandwich-like structure helps precisely detect the sound and vibration of the vocal cords by the generation of a triboelectric voltage. The triboelectric voltage results from the coupling effect of the contact electrification as well as electrostatic induction. This sensor works by converting the frictional force that is generated by the oscillation of the transparent conductive nanofiber into electric energy. The sensitivity of the NM microphone in response to sound emissions is evaluated by fabricating two device structures, such as a freestanding hybrid NM, integrated with a holey PDMS film (NM microphone), and another fully adhered to a planar PDMS film without a hole. “As a proof-of-concept demonstration, our NM microphone was applied to a personal voice security system requiring voice-based identification applications. The NM microphone was able to accurately recognize a user’s voice and authorize access to the system by the registrant only” reads the research paper. A luxurious old hacienda in Ca?as

first_imgIt’s hard to not run into wildlife while wandering the grounds of Hotel La Pacifica.? Lindsay Fendt Originally built as an hacienda in the late 1800s, the 2,650-hectare property was once owned by Costa Rican President Bernardo Soto. The hotel is named after Soto’s wife Pacifica Fernández, who used the farm as an escape from the hustle and bustle of San José. The property has been a hotel for more than 25 years, but the family’s original house, La Casona, still stands on another part of the estate.Checking in at the front desk, I was assured by Front Desk Manager Davis Marshall that once I got to my room, I would feel like I was in an hacienda. He was right. Tucked away down a dirt road that passes under the reaching branches of dozens of Guanacaste trees, sits a long row of suites, each themed to feel exactly like a 19th century Spanish-style farmhouse.Whitewashed adobe walls and terracotta tiles accompanied the dark stained wooden beams and barn-door-esque cabinets of my suite. Just in case it didn’t feel enough like a farm, the hotel decorators added a black and white photograph of a tractor right over the bed.But it is the main building that really hammers in the hacienda style. Constructed from the same dark, sturdy wood as the rooms, the hotel’s lobby is built like a barn. Some of the antique furniture and rusting farm tools that decorate the building came from La Casona, and almost everything else was made onsite in the hotel’s own wood and leather shop.After relaxing in the lobby’s rocking chairs, I made my way to the hotel’s restaurant, where I munched on homemade bread. Then, two roosters wandered by my table as I feasted on a delicious hacienda steak, topped with green olives, mushrooms, capers and hearts of palm. I almost hit a deer pulling into the driveway at Ca?as’ only luxury hotel, La Pacifica. Then later, driving to my room, I nearly ran over a paca. The next morning, an entire family of howler monkeys greeted me as I made my way to breakfast.I now understand why Ca?as, a mid-sized agricultural town in the center of Guanacaste, is not known for its wildlife. It’s because all of it has decided to live on the grounds of La Pacifica, and it’s easy to see why. No related posts.center_img Much of what appeared on my plate actually came from La Pacifica’s farm, which has remained functional throughout its years as a hotel. To catch a glimpse of the farm’s cattle, tilapia and organic rice operations, I took the hotel’s farm tour, which is available to all guests for $50 a person.The tour ends at La Casona, the famed tropical getaway of Pacifica Fernández. The hotel kept the house up as a an elaborately adorned museum for years before it was eventually robbed. Though now abandoned, and home to at least 50 bats, looking at the embellished archways and ceramic shingles you can sense what the old farmhouse must have been back when Fernández roamed its halls.Just as we were leaving, a beautiful, white owl swooped in through a window.“Ah there she is,” Marshall said. “The new Do?a Pacifica.”Going there: Hotel La Pacifica is past Ca?as off of the Pan American highway. Coming from San José you will see it on your right 5 km before reaching Liberia. It is a short distance from three major national parks: Palo Verde, Rincón de la Vieja and Río Celeste. All rooms hold up to four people, with standard rooms starting at $41 in the off-season and $58 in the high season. Suites, which upgrade to a queen-sized bed, start at $49 in the off-season and $58 in the high season. The larger studios, which come with a living room, start at $80 in the low season and $96 in the high season. Villas, which include a full kitchen and living area start at $59 in the off-season and $60 in the high season. Through his older brother, he learned of an opening on the Hindenburg. He made his first flight, a transatlantic voyage to Rio de Janeiro, in October 1936.Two months earlier, the Hindenburg had impressed spectators at the Olympic Games in Berlin as it flew over the stadium, a polished silver ship in the sky. Nazi swastikas were emblazoned on the tail of the Hindenburg in red, black and white.The Hindenburg was longer than the U.S. Capitol, end to end, and 250 feet longer than the height of the Washington Monument. It was 135 feet high. Except for a sister Zeppelin that never saw commercial service, there has never been a larger passenger aircraft of any kind. In August 1936, it made its fastest crossing, going from Lakehurst to Frankfurt in 43 hours, 2 minutes.“It was twice as fast as the fastest transatlantic ship,” said Dan Grossman, an Atlanta-based airship historian. “It was definitely the Concorde of its time.”In June 1936, German boxer Max Schmeling flew on the Hindenburg from the United States to Frankfurt after he defeated U.S. heavyweight Joe Louis. With the nose of the aircraft pointing up, dishes and silverware began to clatter to the floor, and he was drenched by a ruptured ballast tank filled with water.As the Hindenburg began to sink closer to the ground, Franz kicked open a hatch used to load provisions onto the craft. He jumped out, a few feet above the ground, and ran. He can be seen in newsreel footage of the disaster.A radio broadcaster, Herbert Morrison, memorably described the scene: “It’s a terrific crash, ladies and gentlemen. It’s smoke, and it’s in flames now; and the frame is crashing to the ground, not quite to the mooring mast. Oh, the humanity!”Franz ran in the direction of the wind, keeping the fire behind him. He escaped with no injuries or burns and was “one of the few survivors who were in the belly of the ship,” Grossman said.The next day, Franz returned to the site of the crash and walked through wreckage to the spot where his bunk had been. There, he found a pocket watch that had been given to him by his grandfather.During World War II, Franz was a radio operator for the German Luftwaffe and later repaired precision machines for the German post office. He also worked as a figure-skating and roller-skating coach. One of his ice skaters, Marika Kilius, won two Olympic silver medals in the pairs competition.Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Annerose Franz; and several children and grandchildren.A week after the crash, Franz testified before a U.S. board of inquiry about the Hindenburg. But the era of the airship came to a ghastly end on May 6, 1937, when the Hindenburg burst into flames as it was attempting to land at a naval station in Lakehurst, New Jersey.Within seconds, the mighty aircraft was reduced to a smoldering metal skeleton, killing 35 of the 97 people on board, plus another person on the ground. It was the first major air disaster on American soil, made more vivid by the newsreel cameras, press photographers and radio reporters who were present to record the Hindenburg’s arrival.Franz managed to escape, leaping to the ground from an opening in the bottom of the airship. He was last surviving crew member of the Hindenburg when he died Aug. 13 at his home near Frankfurt.
